When all around you is fog and clouds and you can't see a thing,
you need a light to see the way.

Outreach English Camps

In 1997, Steve was invited to participate in an Outreach English Camp sponsored by the Evangelical Free Church of America.  The purpose of these Outreach English Camps is  to take French students in the Junior High and Senior High School camping in the French Alps and teach them conversational English.  This outing is organized by the Evangelical Free Churches in France.  Three or four of the churches get together to take their French students up into the mountains for a week of Conversational English classes.

During the week we have two English classes in the morning about 45 minutes for each class starting at 9:00 a.m.  Then at 11:00 a.m. there is a Bible class where the students read from a simplified English New Testament.  After this class there is lunch.

In the afternoon, we teach the students American sports like:  baseball, football, basketball, and volleyball.  We also take the students for a hike up into the mountains.  This is always an experience.  The students are always in great shape.  Students in France walk or ride their bikes everywhere.

In the evening after diner, we have fun and games inside with the students.  There are challenging team games and skits.  French students love to compete.  A little cheating is considered sport.  An if it is well thought out or very creative - kudo's for the student!

After the fun and games, there is a time for sharing and singing.  This is a very special time of the day for the students and counselors to be reflective on their lives, sharing special experiences and the impact of God in these experiences and on their lives.

A few of the students brought their instruments.  Audrey Caillot brought her violin and Hélène Griffonnet brought her flute.  And David Artel, a classical guitarist, also played. They played their instruments during our singing and praise time in the evening.  It was really great to have the students play their instruments along with us in the singing.
